カトリック富岡教会

建築年：昭和4（1929）年

構造：木造一部鉄筋コンクリート造

小樽におけるカトリックの布教は明治15年に始まり、数度の聖堂建設を経て昭和3年現在地に起工し、翌年6月30日に献堂式を挙げました。正面玄関部の尖塔アーチから十字架を掲げた八角小塔にいたる上昇感を強調した建物で、外観は主にゴシック様式を取り入れています。2階にある礼拝堂には、色ガラスを組み合わせたアーチ窓から柔らかな光が入り、神聖な空間となっています。

Missionary work to spread Catholicism in Otaru began in 1882. After the construction of a series houses of worship, work began on the Tomioka Catholic Church in 1928 at its present location and a dedication ceremony was held on June 30 of the following year. The exterior’s primary influence is Gothic and the pointed, arched entry’s rise to a small, crucifix topped octagonal tower emphasizes a sense of ascent. Soft light illuminates the second story chapel from the arched, colored glass windows, creating a sacred feel to the space.
