越中屋は、明治30年代以降の英国の旅行案内書にも載った旅館です。この建築は外国人利用客のための別館で、国際貿易港小樽を象徴する建築のひとつです。正面から見る姿は、中央にある縦2列のベイウィンドウや両脇の丸窓と垂直の窓割りなどが特徴です。また内部にちりばめられているステンドグラスに第一次大戦後のアール・デコ様式の影響がみられます。設計は倉澤国治です。

The Former Etchuya Hotel

Designed by Kuniharu Kurasawa and listed in British travel guides as early as the late 1800’s, the Etchuya, with its wing built exclusively for use by foreigners is especially symbolic of Otaru as a port of international trade. The view from the facade, with its two rows of bay windows surrounded by circular windows on either side and perpendicular fenestrations is a salient feature of the building. Moreover, the influence of post World War I Art Deco design can be seen by the liberal use of stained glass throughout the interior.
